Isaiah 38:1-8

New International Version

Hezekiahโ€™s Illness

38 In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, โ€œThis is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.โ€

2 Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3 โ€œRemember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.โ€ And Hezekiah wept bitterly.

4 Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah: 5 โ€œGo and tell Hezekiah, โ€˜This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will add fifteen years to your life. 6 And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city.

7 โ€œโ€˜This is the Lordโ€™s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: 8 I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.โ€™โ€ So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had gone down.

1 Kings 17:8-16

New International Version

8 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 9 โ€œGo at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.โ€ 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, โ€œWould you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?โ€ 11 As she was going to get it, he called, โ€œAnd bring me, please, a piece of bread.โ€

12 โ€œAs surely as the Lord your God lives,โ€ she replied, โ€œI donโ€™t have any breadโ€”only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat itโ€”and die.โ€

13 Elijah said to her, โ€œDonโ€™t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: โ€˜The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.โ€™โ€

15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
